What is an Upper Arm Lift?

Brachioplasty or Upper Arm Lift is a procedure that improves the contour of the upper arm by removing excess skin and fat. While saggy, redundant skin on the upper arms can be a natural part of the aging process, it is most commonly seen in patients who have experienced massive weight loss. These patients frequently complain of a “bat wing” appearance when they lift their arms away from their torso. Unlike saggy breasts or hanging abdominal skin, which can be hidden under lose clothing, saggy arm skin is difficult to hide when the weather is warm, and they are embarrassed to wear sleeveless or even short-sleeved shirts. Brachioplasty or Upper Arm Lift gives consistently good results in these patients and can greatly enhance their confidence and self esteem.

Since most daily interactions occur face to face, I prefer the posterior approach with an incision in the back of the arm rather than on the inside. In my experience, this consistently results in a thinner, less conspicuous scar than with the inner arm approach. When a patient in a short sleeved shirt reaches out to slide a debit card, hand money to a cashier or shake hands, a scar on the inner aspect of the upper arm is quite visible, whereas a scar on the back of the arm can’t be seen.

The procedure takes about 45 minutes on each side and is done on an out patient basis. I ask patients to keep their hands above their elbows and their elbows at or above heart level as much as possible for the first week to prevent swelling of the fingers and hands. I prefer absorbable sutures placed beneath the skin to prevent stitch marks. Most patients are back to their normal activities in three weeks and find the relatively narrow, permanent scar on the back of the arm an acceptable tradeoff for the hanging, redundant skin.

My upper arm lift was done after weight loss following a gastric sleeve. I feel like a completely new person! – very proud of myself
