Eyelid Surgery Q & A

What happens during eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery can refresh your eyes, prevent that always-tired look, and help you look younger. There are two kinds of eyelid surgery:

Upper eyelid surgery

Upper eyelid surgery is a simple outpatient procedure under local anesthesia. It involves removing sagging upper eyelid skin, a narrow strip of muscle, and a small amount of fat.

Upper eyelid surgery brightens the eyes, opens them wider, and provides a younger appearance.

Lower eyelid surgery

Lower eyelid surgery is a far more complex procedure and requires general anesthesia. Most people who undergo this surgery have bulging fat, baggy skin, sagging muscles, or loose tendons in this area and often, it’s all of these issues together. Some patients have an additional issue, a tear trough deformity, that causes a dark circle close to the nose.

Dr. Mickel can expertly correct all of these problems through lower eyelid surgery. The procedure refreshes the under-eye area, eliminates bagging and sagging, and helps you look more rested and youthful.

Who is a good candidate for eyelid surgery?

The most common reason patients choose upper eyelid surgery is extra skin on the upper lids that often first appears in the late 30s or early 40s.

With lower eyelid surgery, patients often notice new sagging and bagging under the eyes at around the same age however, some people may have baggy lower eyelids in their 20s due to heredity.

Blood thinners (including over-the-counter ones like aspirin, ibuprofen, aspirin powders, vitamin E, fish or flaxseed oils, and others) can lead to bleeding and complications, so you're only a candidate if you’re not taking those things.

I scheduled eyelid surgery. When can I return to work?

Recovery and return to work time depend on the surgery type.

With upper eyelid surgery, recovery is usually smooth and fast. Most patients return to work in a couple of days. Swelling and bruising take 7-10 days to go away entirely.

With lower eyelid surgery, most patients are back at work in 7-10 days and can resume full activity in three weeks. It can take two or three weeks for the swelling and bruising to completely resolve.

After your surgery, Dr. Mickel provides specific recommendations, for example, elevating the head of your bed and applying iced gauze to your upper lids for the first few days.
