Botox and Fillers Q & A

What does Botox® do?

Botox is the most famous nonsurgical cosmetic treatment today. This FDA-approved injectable has an active ingredient called botulinum toxin, which relaxes tight facial muscles it essentially helps your face stop frowning.

Botox works beneath the skin’s surface and ultimately smooths out fine lines and wrinkles.

What kind of lines and wrinkles does Botox treat?

If your lines and wrinkles are related to muscle tightness and overuse, Botox can treat them. Some of the main areas for Botox injections include:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Lines between the brows (“11” lines or frown lines)
  • Forehead lines
  • Upper lip lines*
  • “Bunny” lines around the upper nose*
  • Neck bands*

Botox can treat these types of lines and wrinkles in adults of almost any age, and it’s proven to temporarily smooth moderate-to-severe frown lines in patients aged 18-65.

How long do Botox effects last?

After your treatment session, you might notice effects in as little as a day, with full results visible in about a week. Botox effects last for up to four months.

Does Botox hurt?

You’ll only feel a pricking sensation, which is over almost immediately. It’s effectively a painless treatment that requires no anesthesia. You can return to your normal activities immediately afterward.

Are fillers better than Botox?

Fillers and Botox are both tremendously popular and effective products, but you can’t compare them because they treat different issues. Botox treats dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle movement.

Dermal fillers treat static wrinkles, which develop because of volume loss over the years. Over the years, your body loses hyaluronic acid, the naturally hydrating substance that helps keep your skin tight and youthful. This can lead to laugh lines (nasolabial folds), thinning lips, thinning cheeks, and marionette lines from the lip corners to the chin.

Fillers like JUVÉDERM XC® restore hyaluronic acid, plumping the area where you’ve lost volume and returning it to its former appearance. Additionally, fillers can enhance and define areas like the cheekbones and lips.

So, if you have volume-loss wrinkles, dermal fillers are the right injectable, but if you have muscle-related wrinkles, Botox can’t be beat. The two products combine well, so if you have both kinds of wrinkles, you can achieve a dramatic improvement using both.
